Import 3: Can I convert an EndNote database to Reference Manager?

Answer: Reference Manager 9.5, 10 and 11 can directly convert an EndNote 7 and earlier library as follows:
  1. In Reference Manager select File / Open Database.
  2. Find the EndNote library that you wish to convert, and select it as the database to open.
  3. Click Open and a dialog box will appear. Click Create Reference Manager database to begin creating a Reference Manager database. If you click Open EndNote library in Read Only mode you will be able to view but not edit the reference information in the EndNote library.
  4. After clicking Create Reference Manager database enter a name and location for the database in the Reference Manager database to create: field and click Convert.
This will create a Reference Manager database using the data from your EndNote library; the original EndNote library file will not be affected.

EndNote 8 has a new library format that Reference Manager cannot directly convert. In order to import the references into your Reference Manager database from an EndNote 8 library, do the following:
  1. Export the EndNote 8 library as plain text using the RefMan (RIS) Export style.

  2. Open the text file you exported from EndNote in Microsoft Word. When Word prompts you for the encoding option, select "Other Encoding" and "Unicode (UTF-8)" as the options.

  3. In Word select "File > Save As" and save the document with a new name as plain text with Windows-default as the encoding option.

  4. Use the RIS import filter to import the saved file into Reference Manager.
